  3. When “Perfect Oral Hygiene” Still Isn’t Enough: Hormones, Healing, and the Mouth-Body Connection

I had the pleasure of joining Dr. Kelly Tanner for a powerful conversation about hormones, oral health, and why some women continue to struggle with bleeding gums, dry mouth, inflammation, sensitivity, or breakdown — even when they are doing “everything right.” In this episode, we talk about the mouth as a mirror of the whole body and explore how hormonal shifts, stress, saliva changes, immune response, sleep, airway, inflammation, and the host terrain can all influence what we see clinically. This conversation is especially important for women in midlife, perimenopause, and menopause, but truly applies to anyone who has ever wondered why brushing and flossing alone do not always solve the problem. Oral health is not just about plaque removal. It is about understanding the biology beneath the disease, listening to what the mouth is telling us, and supporting the body’s ability to heal.

Dental hygiene is about so much more than “cleaning teeth.” It is about health, healing and connecting what we see orally to what is happening systemically.  Test, teach, treat, repeat until the mouth is healthy and  the body is healing.

Warmly,

Barbara

very much enjoy your reports and your enthusiasm. I have been practicing periodontics for the past sixty years and still love saving teeth. Yes to implants as an adjunct. Thinking of going back to the phase contrast microscope; used to use in the 70;s when there was no monitor. Any suggestions on current options? thank and regards

      Dr. N!
Come on back to saving teeth! We need more of you. I can recommend Bill Landers at Oratec – He will steer you right. And then come join us at the IAOMT.org. Our next meeting is in September in Columbus!
I am happy to Zoom with you any time.
Thanks again for reaching out. I love and appreciate that you do.
